What grade do tutors have to be in to volunteer?
The ideal grade range is 9-12. However, if you are in 7th or 8th grade and are passionate about tutoring, please email us at triangirlstutoring@gmail.com.
Do tutors have to be girls?
No; the program is targeted towards supporting girls in STEM, but tutors can be any gender.
What is the time commitment of this program?
Our volunteers hold after-school clubs that last around an hour, every week. The specific schedule is pretty flexible and is negotiated between tutors and the elementary schools they will tutor at.
However, once a schedule is set up, tutors should rigorously stick to it, although it is fine for tutors to skip sessions once in a while if they work in a group of three given that the other two tutors are available that week.
Will tutors have to write lesson material?
Tutors will not have to write lesson material; they can use previous lesson material that can be found in this website in the ‘Resources’ page. On the other hand, if they think that a new worksheet will be helpful, they can write up and use a new worksheet.
Will tutors receive student service learning (SSL) hours?
Yes, we provide SSL hours to all our tutors. Worst case scenario, we will ask each individual elementary school to give the SSL hours, but ideally, we as a program will be able to hand them out. We are still working out the logistics on that!
Will transportation be provided to tutors?
Unfortunately, we cannot provide transportation. However, we will keep in mind the locations of our tutors when contacting elementary schools, so it is likely that a bus from your school to your designated elementary school, especially if you attend a magnet school. Carpooling among tutors is also an option. However, transportation home from the elementary schools is not provided.
